Commander’s Notes

Colfax Training - Mar 99It has been a very busy spring! We had asked several of the folks in the unit to prepare short articles on what has occurred for this publication. Three articles were written for this issue. You can see them by clicking on these links:   Pvt. Barney Cline wrote about our March training weekend at Colfax;  Pvt. Tom Prisk wrote about Avesaboro Living History; 1st. Lt. Stewart wrote about Oak Ridge Living History.

I have several issues and want to bring everyone up to date. First, we have acquired two additional horses, both Morgans and both geldings. They are 7-8 years old and named Bill and Bud. They are a matched pair who appear to be very calm. They are not registered, but at $3000.00 for the pair that did not matter. Sgt. Jim Lankford, Bill Horne, Chris Moose and Ed Rhew have all seen them and recommended we buy them. Several unit members fronted the money, but we must pay them back within the year. I'll circulate a list at Colfax for folks to sign up.

Second, if you are planning to attend the Wilderness Event bring $15.00 to Colfax and I will pre-register us as a unit.

Third, the event at Salem will be the weekend of 7-9 May not the first weekend.

Lastly, I will bring a roster and the events we have left and will ask you to give us your best guess on what events you plan to attend the remainder of this year.

Please let us know if you will attend training at Colfax this coming weekend. The new horses will be there and we may be able to hook them as a team. Tom Prisk has some crew drills he wants to work on and Jim Lankford is planning some more horse "education." I want to do some dismounted drill as a section and then duplicate them mounted and with the guns. You men give us your continued support and we will roll three guns on the field at Cedar Creek with a 6-up and a 4-up team supporting them. I think you all appreciate just how much work there is in doing what we do, and you make it possible.

John Paul Strain asked to pass on to you his compliments on your professionalism. He said this unit from the officers down to the privates impressed him and he was delighted to work with us.

Hope to see you this weekend!

Capt. David L. Stanley, Cmdg.
